Acadia does not close for the winter. Its roads do. From 1 December to 14 April the Park Service shuts most of the Park Loop Road to cars, Cadillac’s summit road included, and turns it over to skiers, snowshoers and snowmobiles. November sits in between: the visitor centers, campgrounds and the free bus are done, but the Loop Road and Cadillac are still open to cars, with no reservation.
This page is the park from November 2026 to April 2027: what closes and when, what stays open, and what you can do once the snow comes. For a bed, Bar Harbor after the bus stops has the hotels that stay open, each from its own site.
The off-season calendar
Park dates are the Park Service’s hours and seasons table and winter page, and the Jordan Pond House’s are its own; the town dates are the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s and the town’s.

In October the rest of the season ended. The free Island Explorer stopped after 12 October (the operator’s date for 2026), and Sieur de Monts Nature Center closed after the same day. So did the Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton, on the Park Service’s listing for it, which moved its last day from 14 to 12 October during October; the park’s hours table, edited again on 31 October, still gives the 14th. Blackwoods, the last campground open, closed at 10 a.m. on 19 October. The foliage page has those two weeks date by date.
November: the in-between month
November is the month to drive Acadia without a crowd or a reservation. The Cadillac Summit Road needs no reservation from 26 October, and it and the rest of the Park Loop Road stay open to cars until 30 November, weather permitting. The Park Service posts official alerts about severe weather and emergency closures of roads on its Current Conditions page, which is the one to read on the morning you go.
What is gone by November:
- Every park visitor center. Hulls Cove is the last, closing after 31 October.
- Every campground. There is no winter camping anywhere in the park (below).
- The free bus. Nothing replaces the Island Explorer inside the park until spring, so a November trip is a driving trip.
- Food in the park. The Jordan Pond House restaurant closed after 23 October and its Carriage Road Carry Out after the 25th. Its gift store’s last day was 1 November (the Park Service’s table gives the 2nd).
- The unpaved park roads, to cars, from 15 November.
The fall color is past by November: Maine’s foliage pages put the coast’s typical peak in the second or third week of October. What November has instead is the Loop Road nearly to yourself, and Cadillac at sunrise with no reservation to win.
Which roads stay open to cars in winter
From 1 December to 14 April, weather permitting, the Park Service keeps two sections of the Park Loop Road open to cars, by its winter page:
- Ocean Drive, from Schooner Head Road to Otter Cliff Road. This is the coast: Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff. From downtown Bar Harbor take Route 3 south about a mile and turn left on Schooner Head Road for 2.5 miles; at the intersection turn right, and 0.1 mile on, turn left onto the Loop Road at the entrance station, which is open all year and sells every kind of pass. The next two miles are one-way, and every vehicle leaves at Otter Cliff Road.
- Jordan Pond Road, from Seal Harbor to the south end of Jordan Pond. In about a mile it joins a short plowed section of the Loop Road at the pond. You leave the way you came.
Sargent Drive, along Somes Sound off Route 198 toward Northeast Harbor, is the Park Service’s third winter drive. The Schoodic Loop Road and the road to Schoodic Point are open all year; the Schoodic page has the drive.
State and county roads on the island are plowed all winter. Park roads are plowed and sanded in daylight only, so snow that falls overnight stays on them until the crews are out.
Seven restrooms stay open all winter: Brown Mountain, the Eagle Lake boat launch, the Eagle Lake carriage road, the Fabbri Picnic Area, Jordan Pond, the Parkman Mountain trailhead and Sand Beach.
Cadillac in winter
The summit road’s year runs in three parts:
| When | Driving up Cadillac |
|---|---|
| 20 May — 25 Oct 2026 | A $6 vehicle reservation, sold only on recreation.gov |
| 26 Oct — 30 Nov 2026 | Open to cars, no reservation, weather permitting |
| 1 Dec 2026 — 14 Apr 2027 | Closed to cars. Open to hikers, skiers, snowshoers and snowmobiles |
From 7 October to 6 March, Cadillac is the first place in the country to see the sunrise, in the Park Service’s words on its Cadillac Mountain page. Most of that span falls while the road is closed, so a winter sunrise on the summit means walking up in the dark. The North Ridge Trail is 4.4 miles round trip, and the Park Service allows 2.5 to 4 hours for it at an average pace; in winter it is exposed granite under snow and ice, and traction on your boots is essential. The closed summit road is a snowmobile route, so anyone walking or skiing it shares it with machines.
The 2027 reservation season is not set yet. In 2026 it runs from 20 May to 25 October, and the reservations page will carry the 2027 dates and release times once the Park Service sets them.
Short days: sunrise and sunset
The US Naval Observatory’s figures for Cadillac’s coordinates, in Eastern Standard Time:
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Nov 2026 | 6:10 a.m. | 4:22 p.m. |
| 1 Dec 2026 | 6:49 a.m. | 3:55 p.m. |
| 15 Dec 2026 | 7:02 a.m. | 3:54 p.m. |
| 21 Dec 2026 | 7:06 a.m. | 3:56 p.m. |
| 31 Dec 2026 | 7:09 a.m. | 4:03 p.m. |
| 15 Jan 2027 | 7:06 a.m. | 4:19 p.m. |
| 15 Feb 2027 | 6:33 a.m. | 5:02 p.m. |
| 1 Mar 2027 | 6:10 a.m. | 5:21 p.m. |
That is under nine hours of daylight around the solstice, with the sun down before 4 p.m. for most of December. The Park Service tells winter hikers to expect early darkness, not to rely on a phone as a map or a flashlight, and to be ready to turn back.
Skiing, snowshoeing and the carriage roads
The 45 miles of carriage roads are Acadia’s winter trails. Skiing, snowshoeing, walking, running and biking are all allowed on them, and you can also ski the unplowed park roads, which double as snowmobile routes. Ski equipment and rentals are available in the local towns, the Park Service says, and one of the hotels that stay open lends snowshoes at the front desk.
Who grooms them. Volunteers of the Acadia Winter Trails Association, a group that has partnered with Friends of Acadia and the park since 1990, set tracks for both classic and skate skiing on routes agreed with the park. They work from two bases, the Hulls Cove Visitor Center and the Brown Mountain Gatehouse, and they groom only when two conditions hold (Friends of Acadia):
- new snow deeper than six inches, and
- a frozen roadbed, meaning at least five days of freezing temperatures.
Shallow snow and soft, wet ground leave the roads open to damage, so below that line there is no grooming, and skiers are welcome to set their own tracks.
Where conditions are posted. Friends of Acadia’s Ski Acadia page carries every grooming report, dated and timed, and Friends of Acadia also posts grooming updates on its Facebook page. Last winter’s reports name the routes groomed: from the Eagle Lake side, the Eagle Lake connector and the Witch Hole, Paradise Hill and Aunt Betty loops; from Brown Mountain, the Hadlock and Amphitheater loops, the Parkman connector and Upper Around Mountain. Last winter was the exception: grooming went on almost daily for more than two months, and Friends of Acadia called good conditions holding for most of a season almost unheard of in recent years.
Sharing a groomed road. The Park Service asks everyone to avoid trampling the groomed ski tracks, and Friends of Acadia asks walkers to keep to the far side of the groomed surface from the classic tracks, so footprints do not break up the skate lane. Dogs stay on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and that rule is why dog sleds, dog carts and skijoring are banned in the park.
Spring is mud season. The carriage roads “often close to all traffic during mud season, typically March and April”, on the Park Service’s biking page, and the date moves from year to year — the carriage roads page has three recent years.
Snowmobiles
Snowmobiles are allowed on the 27-mile Park Loop Road system, the road up Cadillac included, and most fire roads, with east-side and west-side route maps on the park’s winter page. The rules:
- Not on the carriage roads, except the east side of Eagle Lake, which links to the Park Loop Road at Bubble Road. Never off-road or on a hiking trail.
- 35 mph on the Park Loop Road and 25 mph on unpaved roads. Yield to everyone who is not on a snowmobile.
- Maine registration required, and Maine’s snowmobile laws apply. Drivers must be 14 or older; riders under 18 wear approved helmets. Tracked side-by-sides are not allowed.
- Lights on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, and whenever visibility is under 500 feet. No towing people on sleds or skis.
The Park Service points snowmobilers to the Hulls Cove Visitor Center lot for access. There is no snowmobile rental on Mount Desert Island.
Hiking on ice
The Park Service calls microspikes, crampons, cleats or ice grippers “essential for hiking snow-packed and icy trails”, with two warnings attached: traction can be dangerous on slick granite, and trekking poles are highly encouraged. Conditions change quickly, especially higher up, and the weather on Cadillac and the other summits can be drastically different from Bar Harbor’s.
Pick easy ground. In the Park Service’s words, routes that are challenging in summer “tend to be highly ill-advised in fall and winter”. The iron-rung climbs of the Beehive and the Precipice are the obvious ones to leave for summer. The park suggests Ship Harbor, Ocean Path and the carriage roads instead.
Closed now, with no reopening date posted:
- Ocean Path, the southern section, from the trailhead across from the Otter Point parking lot to the trail’s end, since 31 August 2026. Sand Beach to Thunder Hole is open.
- The eastern section of the Beech Mountain Loop Trail, since 21 September 2026. The outer loop and the Beech South Ridge and Beech West Ridge trails still reach the summit.
- Schoodic Mountain Road, from the Schoodic Loop Road to the top of Schoodic Head, since 31 August 2026.
All three are the Park Service’s alerts, on its Current Conditions page.
Ice on the lakes. Skating is possible on park lakes and ponds, but the Park Service says they rarely freeze smoothly, are seldom free of snow, and can have open water on the larger ones: check the ice thickness before you step out. Ice fishing is popular when the ice allows and needs a Maine freshwater license.
Camping: none until spring
“There is no backcountry camping, ‘out-of-bounds’ camping, overnight parking, or winter camping allowed anywhere in Acadia.”
That is the Park Service’s camping page, and it is absolute. In 2026 Seawall and Schoodic Woods closed at 10 a.m. on 12 October, and Blackwoods at 10 a.m. on 19 October.
Planning 2027 starts in the off-season. Under the park’s release rule, campsites at Blackwoods, Seawall and Schoodic Woods go on sale six months ahead, a month at a time, at 10 a.m. Eastern on the first of the month, so May 2027 opens on 1 December. The campground page has the whole calendar, including Duck Harbor’s single 1 April release.
Passes and where to ask in winter
A pass is required all year, for everyone 16 and over. In 2026 it is $35 per private vehicle for seven days, or $20 a person on foot or by bike, and non-US residents aged 16 and over pay a $100 nonresident fee on top unless they are admitted with an annual or America the Beautiful pass. The fees page has the passes and the arithmetic. Veterans Day, 11 November, is a fee-free day for US citizens and residents only.
Where to buy one in winter, from the Park Service’s fees page:
- The entrance station on the Park Loop Road at Schooner Head Road, open all year for information and for every kind of pass.
- Automated fee machines, by credit card, 24 hours a day all year: one in a pavilion in the Hulls Cove Visitor Center parking lot, one outside the Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton, and one inside the gatehouse at the Schoodic Institute’s entrance. They sell the weekly vehicle, motorcycle and individual passes.
- The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, 2 Cottage Street, at the corner of Main Street. The Park Service lists it as its winter information point and as a place to buy passes, and the chamber’s visitor center is open all year.
Recreation.gov sells passes online all year too.
Getting around without the bus
With the Island Explorer gone, the off-season is a car trip. Downeast Transportation, which runs the Island Explorer in summer, keeps its year-round buses going on weekdays only, and not on Thanksgiving, the Friday after, Christmas, New Year’s Day or Martin Luther King Day (its service calendar). None of them goes into the park.
The one a visitor can use is the Bar Harbor — Bangor bus, Monday to Friday, on the timetable updated on 6 January 2026: it leaves Kebo Street in Bar Harbor, across from the Seasider Inn lot, at 8:20 a.m. and reaches Bangor’s airport at 10:10 a.m., and the afternoon bus leaves the airport at 1:45 p.m. and reaches Kebo Street at 3:10 p.m. The fare from Bar Harbor to Bangor is $9, in exact change.
Parking in Bar Harbor. The town’s paid parking runs only from 1 May to 30 October. From 15 November to 15 April its winter parking ban applies: no parking on the street during a snowstorm or snow removal, cars left there are towed, and the bans are announced in the local news (the town’s parking page).
What winter is like
The Park Service gives winter as “Variable; 14–35 F”, and the chamber puts the rest plainly: snow is common, but on the coast it comes with a mix of ice and rain. Weather on Cadillac and the other summits can be drastically different from Bar Harbor’s, so a mild morning in town says little about the summit.
The trade is the quiet. The roads that are jammed in August are empty, the carriage roads are ski trails when the snow allows, and Sand Beach and Ocean Drive are yours.
Bar Harbor in the off-season
Much of the town closes for the winter; the chamber says many shops take a “winter nap”. Four Bar Harbor hotels stay open all winter and several run into November — Bar Harbor after the bus stops has them, each from its own site. With no bus, the choice of base is simple. Bar Harbor is the closest, minutes from Schooner Head Road and Ocean Drive. Ellsworth, 20 to 30 minutes off the island, is the cheapest and gives up nothing once the bus has stopped. Trenton’s reason, the Gateway Center bus, is gone until spring. Where to stay compares the towns in full.
For a wet day, things to do in Bar Harbor has the places that stay open and the dates the others close.
Two events are posted for the season, both by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce:
- Early Bird Pajama Sale and Bed Races, Saturday 14 November 2026. Participating downtown shops open early, from 6 a.m. to noon, with extra savings at some of them for coming in pajamas, and at 10 a.m. teams race decorated beds down Cottage Street, starting in front of the Criterion (the chamber’s page). Free to attend.
- Village Holidays, Friday 4 December 2026. It starts on the Village Green at 4:30 p.m.; Santa arrives and the tree is lit at 5:30 p.m., there are crafts and a visit with Santa at the MDI YMCA until 7, and participating downtown businesses stay open for the Shop the Madness sale from 6 to 10 p.m. (the chamber’s page).
The chamber’s events calendar carries the rest of the season as organizers post it.
Spring
The Park Loop Road reopens to cars on 15 April, and the unpaved roads on 15 May. The carriage roads may still be shut for mud season then. The 2027 dates for the Cadillac reservation and the Island Explorer come later: in 2026 both began on 20 May, with the rest of the bus routes from 23 June. Acadia in spring picks up on 15 April and has what opens when, to June 2027.
