Planning an Acadia trip

The unglamorous half: the Cadillac summit reservation, where the free bus goes, where to stay and when to come. Reservation windows and bus schedules change every season, so every page says when we last checked.

Acadia entrance fees, and the two that catch people out
$35 a vehicle for seven days, required year-round. The park takes no cash at all, and non-US residents pay $100 a head on top unless they hold an annual pass.

Cadillac Mountain reservations, and the 10 a.m. drop that actually works
No reservation is needed from 26 October: drive up with a park pass until the road closes on 1 December, weather permitting. In season, a $6 vehicle reservation.

A free bus to every trailhead you are fighting to park at. Seasonal, funded by the park pass you already bought, and consistently ignored.

Renting a cottage on Mount Desert Island for the week
Mount Desert Island is four towns. Bar Harbor registers and inspects rentals and caps whole houses, four nights at least; the other three do not. Maine adds 9% tax.

Bar Harbor has the free bus in season, Trenton for less. The Island Explorer is off until 2027.

The Bar Island crossing and Thunder Hole, and the tide that decides both
A gravel bar you can walk an island on, three hours a day. A granite channel that throws spray 40 feet. Both run on the tide, at opposite ends of it.

Sand Beach, the 9 a.m. parking lot and the 50-degree water
Acadia's largest sandy beach, reached by a staircase down the cliff. The lot fills by 9 a.m. in season and the water runs 50 to 60F in summer.

Acadia fall foliage 2026, and the week everything closes
Forecast peak was 12 October, with 11 to 14 the days to aim for, and by 26 October the park was fading. The closings run on to 1 December.

Acadia's Park Loop Road reopens to cars on 15 April 2027. What opens next, to June: Cadillac, campgrounds, the free bus, the carriage roads and black flies.

Open all year, pass required. Cars can drive the Loop Road and Cadillac to 30 November, no reservation from 26 October; from 1 December most of it closes to cars.

Things to do in Bar Harbor in fall, with closing dates
For rain, evenings and the late season, from each place's own hours. The Abbe is open Mon-Sat, the Dorr to 19 November; the Historical Society closed 24 Oct.

The 21-foot rule, and the bike rack that counts toward it
Vehicles over 21 feet are banned from Cadillac Summit Road and Schoodic Loop Road, bike racks included, and a valid reservation will not get you in.

Acadia camping, and the 10 a.m. drop you must be awake for
90 percent of sites go on sale six months ahead, in monthly blocks, at 10 a.m. EST on the first. Duck Harbor sells its entire season on 1 April.

Bass Harbor Head Light 27 spaces, sunset gridlock, no bus
180,000 visitors a year, one 27-space lot and no roadside parking. The Park Service warns open spaces may exist only during the day. No bus, no RVs.

Class 1 e-bikes only, no bikes on the private carriage roads, bus racks reject half the bikes people bring, and mud season closes everything on a moving date.

Schoodic Peninsula, the half of Acadia kept quiet on purpose
The only mainland part of Acadia, deliberately managed as a low-visitation area, reachable on a $22 ferry that the free bus meets at the dock.

Dogs in Acadia, six banned trails and eleven to skip
100 miles of trail and 45 miles of carriage road allow dogs. Six trails ban them outright, and the Park Service gives two different Sand Beach date ranges.
