In Acadia the free bus decides where to stay, and on Monday 12 October 2026 it stopped. The operator’s 2026 service calendar ran the Island Explorer “through October 12, 2026” (the Park Service’s Island Explorer page says the 13th), and there is no free bus again until next season.

The where-to-stay page turns on that bus, and it says what happens next: every base becomes a driving base, and Bar Harbor’s main advantage is gone until spring. What is left to decide is which hotels are still open. Here they are, each from its own site, with the nights Booking.com was selling rooms when we checked on 27 October 2026.

What changes after the bus stops

The park itself stays open all year, and an entrance pass is required all year. What closes, from the Park Service’s hours and seasons page:

DateWhat changes
Mon 12 OctThe Island Explorer’s last day (the operator’s date). The Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton closes, on the Park Service’s listing for it
Wed 14 OctThe Gateway Center’s date in the Park Service’s hours table, which its listing moved to the 12th this fall
Fri 23 OctJordan Pond House restaurant closes
Sun 25 OctLast day a Cadillac Summit reservation is required
Sat 31 OctHulls Cove Visitor Center closes
Sun 15 NovUnpaved park roads close to cars
Tue 1 DecThe Park Loop Road and the paved park roads close to cars until 15 April

The winter closure has two exceptions, from the Park Service’s winter page: Ocean Drive, from Schooner Head Road to Otter Cliff Road, and Jordan Pond Road up to the Jordan Pond lot stay open to cars, weather permitting. The entrance station on the Park Loop Road at Schooner Head Road sells passes all year. Acadia in winter has the rest of the off-season: the drives that stay open, the ski grooming and the snowmobile routes.

The week the bus stops is also the fall-color week, and the foliage page has it date by date.

Open all winter

Four Bar Harbor hotels say they are open year-round and, when we checked on 27 October, were on sale at Booking.com for nights in November, December, January, February and March:

  • The Atlantic Oceanside, 119 Eden Street. Its sister hotel, the Bar Harbor Grand, recommends it to off-season visitors as “open year round”. The Atlantic Oceanside lends snowshoes at the front desk and keeps its indoor pool and hot tub open all year. It is one of the five Route 2 hotels on the where-to-stay page, with its own Island Explorer stop in season: on the 2026 fall timetable, every 30 minutes until 2:45 p.m. and every 15 minutes until 9 p.m., to 12 October. Its own site now calls it the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Event Center.
  • The Inn on Mount Desert, on Mount Desert Street in town. Its group’s winter page lists it as “Open year-round”, and the inn puts the waterfront less than 10 minutes away on foot.
  • The Pathmaker Hotel, on Cottage Street a block from the water, with an underground garage. “Open year-round”, on the same page.
  • Hanscom’s Motel & Cottages, on Route 3 outside town: twelve cottages and motel units, 4 miles from the village and 2 from the park’s main entrance by the motel’s own figures. Its own site says “Open Year Round”.

Open into November

These stay open past the bus and close later in the year. Four of them belong to the same group as the Inn on Mount Desert and the Pathmaker, and the latest dates on the group’s winter page are last winter’s, so the table gives them as last winter’s. The right-hand column is this year: the latest night we checked on which Booking.com was selling rooms.

Where to stay once the bus has stopped

With no bus, the comparison on the where-to-stay page changes:

  • Bar Harbor keeps what it had apart from the bus: it is minutes from the Loop Road. In season it is the hub of the free Island Explorer and costs the most per night; after 12 October it is simply the closest base, and the four hotels above are open all winter.
  • Trenton loses its reason. Its case was the free all-day parking and the bus at the Acadia Gateway Center, and the Gateway Center itself closed in mid-October: after the 12th on the Park Service’s listing for it, which moved from the 14th during October, and after the 14th in its hours table. For 15 January, Booking.com’s Trenton search found one property.
  • Ellsworth, the cheapest base on the where-to-stay page and 20 to 30 minutes off the island, was never on the bus, so it gives up nothing: plan on an hour a day in the car either way. For 15 January, Booking.com was still selling rooms at Ellsworth’s Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn and Home2 Suites.

How we checked

Each hotel’s season is from its own site, or its group’s, read on 1 October 2026 and again on 26 October. The Booking.com nights are from Booking.com’s own search for Bar Harbor on 27 October, for one room and two adults, one night at a time: 3 November, every night from 12 to 21 November and from 24 November to 8 December, 11, 12, 15, 19, 24, 27 and 31 December, 1 to 4, 8, 13 and 15 January, 17 February, and 10 to 13 and 19 March. A hotel missing from that search on a given night may simply have been full, so this page names only hotels whose own sites say how long they stay open, and prints that beside what Booking.com was selling. The first check, on 1 October, found the same hotels on sale into November, on fewer nights tried.

Quick answers

Are Bar Harbor hotels open in November?

Some are. The Atlantic Oceanside, the Inn on Mount Desert, the Pathmaker and Hanscom's Motel & Cottages stay open all winter. The Primrose, Bar Harbor Manor, the Little Fig Hotel, the Hearthside Inn, the Bar Harbor Grand, the Bluenose Inn and the Saltair Inn run into November, and on 27 October Booking.com was selling rooms at each of them for nights in November — the Bar Harbor Grand to 14 November, the others but the Primrose to the last days of the month, and the Primrose to 2 January.

Which Bar Harbor hotels are open year-round?

The Atlantic Oceanside on Eden Street, the Inn on Mount Desert and the Pathmaker Hotel in town, and Hanscom's Motel & Cottages on Route 3, by each one's own site or its group's. On 27 October Booking.com was selling rooms at all four for nights from November through March.

Does the Island Explorer run after mid-October?

No. The operator ran the 2026 season through Monday 12 October (the Park Service's page says the 13th), and there is no Island Explorer again until next season.

Can you drive the Park Loop Road in winter?

Until 1 December. From 1 December to 14 April the Park Service closes the Park Loop Road to cars, the Cadillac summit road included, except for two sections — Ocean Drive between Schooner Head Road and Otter Cliff Road, and Jordan Pond Road to the Jordan Pond lot. An entrance pass is required all year.

Do you need a Cadillac reservation in late October?

Not after Sunday 25 October 2026, when the reservation season ended. From 26 October no reservation is needed, and the summit road closes to cars with the rest of the Park Loop Road on 1 December.
