Drive up Cadillac
No reservation is needed from 26 October: drive up with a park pass until the road closes on 1 December, weather permitting. In season, a $6 vehicle reservation.
Pick your base
The free Island Explorer ended its 2026 season on 12 October, so every base is now a driving base: Bar Harbor is the walkable one, Trenton is cheaper, Ellsworth cheapest.
Choose your big outing
A whale watch far offshore, a lobster haul with a stop at a ledge where seals haul out, a cruise timed to the sunset, or a bus that does the Loop Road for you.

Seasonal closure
The Precipice Trail
Iron rungs bolted to a cliff, 1,000 feet up in under a mile. Closed most springs for nesting falcons, and a trail the Park Service says not to descend.

Rungs, ledges and 450 feet of exposure in under a mile. The cheapest way to find out whether Acadia's iron-rung trails are for you.

Jordan Pond Path
3.3 nearly flat miles around a glacial pond with the Bubbles beyond it. The easiest famous hike in Acadia — but the western half is not the eastern half.

The Island Explorer, and why nobody uses it
A free bus to every trailhead you are fighting to park at. Seasonal, funded by the park pass you already bought, and consistently ignored.

Acadia itinerary 1, 2 or 3 days, planned around the tide
Bar Island needs low tide, Thunder Hole the hours before high, so they go at different ends of the day. With a car, without one, and after the season ends.

Acadia entrance fees, and the two that catch people out
$35 a vehicle for seven days, required year-round. The park takes no cash at all, and non-US residents pay $100 a head on top unless they hold an annual pass.

Acadia camping, and the 10 a.m. drop you must be awake for
90 percent of sites go on sale six months ahead, in monthly blocks, at 10 a.m. EST on the first. Duck Harbor sells its entire season on 1 April.

Dogs in Acadia, six banned trails and eleven to skip
100 miles of trail and 45 miles of carriage road allow dogs. Six trails ban them outright, and the Park Service gives two different Sand Beach date ranges.
