Where to stay near Acadia

Acadia’s lodging decision is not really about rooms. It is about whether you can use the free bus.

Until the 2027 season, you cannot. The Island Explorer’s 2026 season ended on 12 October (the operator’s date; the Park Service’s page says the 13th), and its own site has no 2027 dates yet. Until the buses run again every base is a driving base, and Bar Harbor is simply the closest one: the Bar Harbor hotels that stay open have their own page. What follows about the bus is how the 2026 season ran.

The options

Why Bar Harbor is worth paying for

Not the rooms. The bus.

The parking lots at Sand Beach, the Beehive and Jordan Pond fill by mid-morning in season, and the Loop Road is one-way, so missing a space means a long way round. Staying in Bar Harbor in the bus season, you walk to the village green, get on a free bus, and the car does not move. Out of season the car moves every day, wherever you stay.

It also means dinner is a walk rather than a drive, which matters more than it sounds on a trip where you have already driven the Loop Road twice.

Where on the bus routes

The operator’s timetables show where the buses stopped in 2026, which is the useful way to choose a street:

• Downtown, near the Village Green. The Green is the Island Explorer’s hub. Route 3 ran from the Green to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff; Route 4, the Loop Road, started at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center and added Sieur de Monts, Wildwood Stables and Jordan Pond.
• Eden Street. Route 2 ran out from the Green past College of the Atlantic, with timetabled stops at the Atlantic Oceanside, the CAT ferry terminal, the Regency, the Bar Harbor Motel, the Acadia Inn and Wonder View. In the fall it ran every 30 minutes until 2:45 p.m. and every 15 minutes from then until 9 p.m.
• Trenton. Route 1 left the Acadia Gateway Center every 30 minutes in the fall (every 20 in summer) and reached the Village Green in about 45 minutes, by way of the Hulls Cove Visitor Center. “Parking at the Acadia Gateway Center is free all day”, in the operator’s own FAQ. The last fall bus back left the Green at 9:15 p.m. That was Trenton’s whole case, and it ended with the season: the Gateway Center itself closed in mid-October, after the 12th on the Park Service’s listing for it and after the 14th in its hours table.
• Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor. Route 7 ran about six times a day each way in the fall, 37 or 38 minutes on most trips between the Village Green and Southwest Harbor’s Main Street, then on to Bass Harbor and Seawall Campground. It did not run the Park Loop Road; for Sand Beach or Jordan Pond you changed in Bar Harbor.

The five hotels with their own Route 2 stop

Route 2 ran one way round: it reached the Atlantic Oceanside and the Regency on the way out of town, and the Bar Harbor Motel, the Acadia Inn and Wonder View on the way back. So the ride was short in one direction and longer in the other. Minutes are from the operator’s fall timetable, which ran 17 August to 12 October 2026, with the first bus leaving the Village Green at 7:45 a.m. and the last at 9 p.m.:

All five are on Booking.com, at the top of this page. Booking.com lists the Regency as the Holiday Inn Bar Harbor Regency, and the Atlantic Oceanside’s own site now calls it the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Event Center. Two of them matter beyond the bus: the Regency takes dogs of 30 pounds and under, for a fee per night (the dog page has the rest of its rules), and the Atlantic Oceanside stays open all winter, after the bus has stopped — the Bar Harbor hotels that stay open have their own page.

A cottage or house for the week

For families, groups and anyone staying a week, Vrbo’s list for the island, with the town lists at the top of this page, holds whole cottages, cabins and apartments from Bar Harbor to Northeast, Seal and Southwest Harbor, and none on the mainland. The island’s four towns rent them by different rules, and Bar Harbor alone registers and inspects its rentals and holds a whole house to four nights at least: renting a cottage on Mount Desert Island for the week has the towns, the rules, Maine’s 9% tax and when to look.

The season is the real variable

Acadia crams most of its visitors into a short summer and fall. The consequences:

• August prices bear little relation to June prices.
• Much of Bar Harbor closes outside the season.
• The Island Explorer stopped running after 12 October in 2026, which took away the main reason to pay for Bar Harbor in the first place until the 2027 season. Which hotels stay open after that is its own page.
• Cadillac reservations are not required outside the reservation season, which in 2026 ran 20 May to 25 October. That removes a different problem.

The bus dates, because this page turns on them

For 2026 the operator’s service calendar had the Gateway Center, Loop Road and Schoodic routes running from 20 May, before Memorial Day. All other routes ran 23 June to 12 October, with fall schedules from 17 August. On 1 November 2026 the calendar still showed 2026, with no dates for 2027.

That changed the late-spring answer. The Loop Road route is the one that reaches Sand Beach, the Beehive and Jordan Pond, so from 20 May staying in Bar Harbor still bought you the thing you were paying for. This page used to say the bus “may not be running” in late spring and steer you off Bar Harbor accordingly. For 2026 that was wrong. Whether 2027 starts as early is the operator’s call, so plan a late-May trip around the bus only once its 2027 calendar is posted.

Late September into early October is the sweet spot most people have already found — the foliage, the bus running to its last day (12 October in 2026), and slightly less of everything else.

Camping, if you planned far enough ahead

Blackwoods, Seawall and Schoodic Woods are the park campgrounds, all three closed for the winter. They book through recreation.gov and summer dates go early. There is no lodge — Acadia never had one — so camping is the only way to sleep inside the park.

Booking it

Bar Harbor’s rooms go early. The town has a fixed number of beds, a short season and a national park attached to it, so July and August book out in spring and the places worth staying go first.

If you want to be inside the park instead, the campgrounds are on recreation.gov and nowhere else — they are the cheapest way to sleep in Acadia, and most of their sites are not on a rolling window. Ninety percent open in monthly blocks, six months ahead at 10 a.m. Eastern on the first of the month, so set a reminder rather than a plan: the first 2027 block, every night in May, goes on sale on 1 December 2026.
